PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION
C.17.1.1.2 Cephalosporins
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Cefquinome is a bactericidal antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin group, which acts by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is characterised by its broad therapeutic spectrum of activity and stability against penicillinases and beta-lactamases.
Pharmacodynamic properties
In vitro activity has been demonstrated against common gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including Pasteurella spp., Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Histophilus somni, Serratia marcescens, Trueperella pyogenes, Bacillus spp., Klebsiella spp., Enterococcus spp., Proteus spp., Citrobacter spp. and Clostridium spp.
Pharmacokinetic properties
In cattle, peak serum concentrations of about 3 µg/mℓ are reached within 1,5 to 2 hours after intramuscular or subcutaneous administration. Cefquinome has a relatively short half-life (2,5 hours), is < 5 % protein bound and excreted unchanged in the urine. In pigs, at double the cattle dosage, maximum serum concentrations of 4,8 µg/mℓ on average are measured within 20 to 60 minutes after intramuscular injection. The average half-life in pigs is about 9 hours.
In vitro sensitivity does not necessarily imply in vivo efficacy.
INDICATIONS
Cobactan® is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections in cattle and pigs caused by the gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms sensitive to cefquinome.
Cattle
Respiratory disease caused by Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica.
Digital dermatitis, infectious bulbar necrosis and acute interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot).
Calves
Escherichia coli septicaemia in calves.
Pigs
For the treatment of bacterial infections of the lungs and respiratory tract caused by Pasteurella multocida, Haemophilus parasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Streptococcus suis and other cefquinome-sensitive organisms.
Mastitis-Metritis-Agalactia syndrome (MMA) with involvement of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and other cefquinome-sensitive organisms.
Piglets
Meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis.
Arthritis caused by Streptococcus spp., Escherichia coli and other cefquinome-sensitive organisms.
Epidermitis (mild or moderate lesions) caused by Staphylococcus hyicus.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Cefquinome should not be administered to animals, which are known to be hypersensitive to cephalosporins and similar compounds.
Do not administer to animals less than 1,25 kg in body weight.
